I was born in Indochina,
I was born in old Virginia
Child of missionaries there
On a thousand acre farm!
Very poor and very hungry, What a cruel life to bear!
From a line of wealthy planters, Full of genteel, southern charm!
Soon I drifted down to Hong Kong, To a waterfront saloon!
In evening by the river, In the moonlight they would croon!
That is where I started singing,
That's where Beasley started singing,
Underneath a Hong Kong moon!
'Neath that sweet plantation moon!
